YOUR LIPS AND ORAL HEALTH
At Kellogg Dental, we take oral health very seriously. Did you know that your oral health care extends beyond your teeth and gums to your lips? It’s not the first thing that comes to mind when forming an oral care routine, but lips are an important part of dental health! They cover and protect your teeth and need just as much protection from the elements as your skin. Your lips are easily dried out and wind, air pollution, and the sun contribute to that dryness. So, what steps can you take to ensure your lips stay healthy and hydrated?
Protect
Unlike your skin, your lips don’t have glands to keep them hydrated. As a result, they dry out quickly! So, keep the lip balm on and make sure to use a balm containing at least an SPF of 15. This will help prevent your lips from getting sunburnt, chapped, or dehydrated.
Hydrate
Keeping yourself hydrated is a no-brainer and it keeps your lips looking healthy too! Dehydration can cause your lips to become dry and cracked. Drinking a lot of water and keeping hydrating lip balm on hand will help prevent your lips from peeling.
Eat Right
Your diet plays a role in skin and lip health, too! Vitamins E and C are vital to our skin health and Omega-3s contain antioxidants that help protect your skin and lips against sun damage.
Don’t Smoke
Smoking is unhealthy for you and can cause your lips to wrinkle prematurely!
